Childhood Anxiety Symptoms

In today’s crazy world, it’s not surprising that childhood anxiety symptoms are becoming more and more prevalent. Instead of a carefree time, childhood for many kids has become a fearsome, uncertain experience. Some experts estimate that as many as one out of nine or ten children suffer from excess anxiety.

If your concerned that your child may be in this situation, here are some symptoms you may want to look for.

A change in a child’s attitude toward school is often an indication of something going wrong. Many problems can cause decreased performance in the classroom. One of the causes can be an anxiety problem. If you notice that your child’s grade have suddenly worsened you should investigate further. At least have a conference with their teacher to see what they’ve noticed in the classroom.

Also, look for some of these other symptoms:

•    Avoiding social act ivies or not wanting to leave home
•    Moodiness, sulking or outbursts of anger
•    Becoming clingy and wanting constant parental presence
•    Appearing nervous and on-edge
•    Developing nervous habits or tics (nail biting, fidgeting with their hair, etc.)
•    Expressing worry that seems out of proportion to the situation
•    Hyperactivity
•    Disrupted sleep or frequent nightmares

None of these symptoms are diagnostic on their own. Problems other than anxiety can cause them. However, combined with your parental instincts this list gives you a pretty good idea of whether or not you should be concerned.

If you are, the next step is to determine what to do about it. One of the most helpful resources I’ve found is the Anxiety Free Child program. Click here to check it out.
